just came back on here after a while. sad to see, devrant used to be so vibrant and hopeful. i remember when it used to be special for dfox and trogus to comment on posts, and there would be a bunch of really interesting stories.8

after publishing a few apps, building some websites, developing some basic operating systems, participating in a summer learning program at google and having got a job managing the computer science department’s website, today i start my intro to computer science class.
god i hate python6 -
ok, but this is cool. it’s an image that renders differently on apple and non-apple devices. not sure if devRant will process it so it doesn’t work, but this is cool. also a huge vulnerability for apple, but cool.9

wows, crazy to think how i started using devrant in middle school, and now i’m going to be in college this fall6
-
does anyone hate material you?
god damn, it seems so fucking stupid. i don’t want a color scheme on every single app i have. i like, from an app developer and app user’s standpoint, that i can recognize an app by its colors. colors are part of an app’s identity. why not just give users raw access to the apis that apps use. i mean, every messaging app is going to look the same now, every browser and every app that has a similar ui to another.5 -
is google fucking with me today?
today i was accepted for some google summer internship program thing. they send me a google form right? so i open it up in chromium and it doesn’t work. it doesn’t let me type in any textboxes or anything. i try to fix it and no luck. then, i copy the link to firefox and voilà, it works.
so, google forms didn’t work in chromium but did in firefox? alright. then i check off yes, send me a copy of my responses to my gmail account. and guess what? gmail classified that as SPAM. google email classified a google forms email as spam.
good work google, you’re fucking stupid.7 -
i think the better (or maybe just longer) you’re a programmer, the less funny memes get. i’m so sick and tired of them. when i started there was occasionally a funny one, now everything is annoying.
seriously, people find this shit funny?12 -
i’m so tired of people who are developers that go to every new popular social media platform and try to teach others to code. god fucking dammit. what could possibly going through these people’s minds? do they really think people who want to learn to code think “i want to learn to code so bad. i should scroll mindlessly through instagram/tiktok until i find someone teaching how to code”?
god, if you’d ever uploaded code to tiktok or instagram to teach others to code, you’re a fucking idiot.4 -
is it fair to say linux is the most popular operating system kernel?
i mean, it powers android, the most popular mobile os, chrome os, nearly all servers, raspberry pi’s, embedded devices and linux desktop operating systems. it has the be the most popular kernel, right?7 -
fuck off with the “do x in y lines of python code” it’s getting so goddamn annoying. yes python is concise. yes libraries do everything. you don’t need to show off someone else’s work with clickbait.
everything is like
“make a web server in 2 lines of python code”
import http.server
server = http.server.serve()
“mine bitcoin in 2 lines of python code”
import bitcoinminer
bitcoinminer.mine()
“do crazy math with 4 lines of python code”
import complex
import numpy
num1 = 1
num2 = 1
num3 = complex.addVectorMagnitudes(num1, num2)9 -
something i love about pop os is that light mode just doesn’t work. it’s straight broken at least for me. i mean sure i have like 5 conflicting desktops installed but yeah, i like the idea that the light theme just straight up doesn’t work. it gives me comfort knowing that the developers who made it and the testers who tested it weren’t subjected to the cruelty of creating and testing a [functional] light theme.5

thinking about making git blogging viewer that will just pull markdown files from github blog repos and render them nicely for viewers. would anyone use it?
i imagine people would just commit markdown files to a repo, and then people could view them like a blog and follow a bunch of blogs (repo) on their phone or desktop. i’ll add support for jekyll and other markdown html generators too.4 -
was applying to college when i saw “enter social security number (optional)”
yes ok, i’d also love to give you my bank account information, address, and birth certificate. anything you need!!!18 -
*has a great company name idea*
*tries to register domain*
*domain taken*
*looks at whois*
*i already own it*
i don’t know how to feel11 -
rumor has it dfox and trogus are abandoning their jobs to prioritize adding stories to devRant.
i mean, a social network without stories? sounds incredibly stupid and irrational to me8 -
i heard if you turn off the lights, light a candle, and yell google three times in the bathroom mirror, you'll get ads about lightbulbs, candles, and google products for the rest of the day2

so there was a tik tok (yes i'm a 17 year old american, so i use tik tok) about making an iphone app: "how to make an iphone app, step one open your mac and download xcode..."
i commented, "if you're not rich and can't afford a mac, learn flutter..." and a bunch of people go "just get a job it's only like $1k"
there's so many rich people out there who just don't understand the concept of debt, how there's not enough jobs, there's so many problems.
there's nothing even political about it. when the amount of unemployed people is more than the amount of job openings, not everyone can have a job, that's just a fact. how even if you have a job, you might be spending most of your money paying off student loans.
some people are just so stupid. they start off in a position where their parents have loads of money that gets them into great schools and internships and programs and they still want to claim it was "hard work" that got them there.31 -
i want to make a paid subscription service for products that can replace google's and are privacy-respecting. primarily email and messaging apps. all with optional e2e. cross platform, open source, all that good stuff.
after that, maybe add alternatives to google docs, or release a first party phone that runs a mobile os that runs lineage or something.7 -
ok hear me out: client side targeted advertising. no unknown data is stored on some server somewhere without you knowing. you just add topics you like to an array and it's sent with each ad request.
i have nothing against advertising, i have stuff against stalking, and i'd be ok with this.9 -
i'm so frustrated with how much effort it takes to create a simple vector logo i'm just going to graph it in desmos graphing calculator and use the fill tool1
