Just switched to 99% DuckDuckGo a couple of days ago.
Is there a term for searching with DDG?

I do occasionally use a white, pink, and purple theme too, but its kind of rare. My usual is black and an array of greens/blues

Never liked the idea of black&green. That too much a cliché for me.
Btw they don't even have a monospace-font.
I stay with black&white.

How is it as a search engine?

I know it's stupid but I just LOVE Google and their products...
I know that they probably have WAY too much information about me... But I'm addicted

Anyway... How are the results of DDG compared to Google?

@MaxS Very good for everyday use, though occasionally i forward to Google by using DDGs bangs.
Plus, for developers, they have cards for major package repos, quick references for all kinds of things, binary conversions and a lot more.

I'm considering ditching google right now. But I'm so into their ecosystem. It's a bit scary now that I think about it. They know everything from me. My contacts, my searches, my mails, where I've been, etc. 😨

All their ubiquitous services, plus centralised login, plus analytics on millions of sites, plus a mobile phone OS with access to gps, mic, camera, Wi-Fi, and all of your data.

They also have all of your friends' and family's data about you. And their friends' and families' data about you. If someone in the world has data about you, chances are good that Google has it.

They store all of this, never deleting any of it, because correlating data is the basis of everything they do.

The short of this is that they know who you are better than you do. And they sell this information.

Furthermore, they answer subpoenas for it. A message to a friend you sent back in 2002? They likely have a copy, and will willingly let the police/government/etc. dig through your life if they ask.

Scary? Completely.

@Ashkin it's funny couse I've signed up in sites I use with google auth. I basically gave everything in a silver plate for the commodity of saving some clicks. I guess duck duck go is a starting point. I'll check of there's any way to install a rom or something into android for more privacy.

@Ashkin yep, you are right. Btw, now that I think about it I don't even need google cloud, I can fucking ssh into my desktop whenever I can! The only thing I can't replace is youtube now that I think about it. I'll make the transition as soon as I get home.

@gitcommit The nice thing (or scary) is that you can download most of the things google stores about you.
It called "Google Takeout":

I did it some time ago, you'll get everything you ever searched for; every location you ever were while google was allowed to track it and the likeliness how you moved and a bunch more stuff.

If you need something to open your eyes, download it and look through all the Json-Files.

I personally think I'm delending too much on google, but I don't want to start ditching "everything" from them.
In thst case the convenience wins.
For example I'll still continue to use:
- Youtube to inform myself and get news
- Drive for important (encrypted) data
- Docs for school projects
- Sometimes Translate to compare against dict.cc
- Google maps to find to new places
- Android with G-Apps for the reasons above

But with searches I'm mostly done. I only use it if I need to (e.g. Locations / G-Maps integration)

@MaxS Actually I'm relying on security rasearchers rather than movies. Not a single movie/series gets it right because it would be too boring.

I love the shortcuts, like amazon search is like "!a cat litter" and stack overflow is !so. Hands down the coolest!

@JoshBent not really, it's just unbiased, and doesn't use your data to customise the search. Perhaps you are not using an effective set of keywords.

@orangelightsabr I compared 50 results 25 image results and 25 normal searches and they all were absolutely destroyed by google, for example: "laracast" in images, shows you some random naked woman, while google shows the logo, links to previous logosy shows laravel etc.

@LinusCDE staying off of Google's radar is tedious,huh? Lol. Always being asked to opt in to some sort of tracking to do something as simple as setting your home in the maps app... Oh brother...big brother 😑

@JoshBent no I just submit better searches I think 😜 I'll say this though, the image search is a little whack, I definitely run a Google search for that. But I don't really have a problem with the regular text searches, I feel like Google's bias searches get in the way sometimes, like when searching for something specific with similar keywords to say a hobby of mine, I get a bunch of useless results tgat I don't care about at that moment lol

@orangelightsabr Its vital sometimes to get accurate results and not being able to reverse image search is really nasty, if one wants to profit from google capability (except image reverse once again..) - one could use startpage (ddg even suggests that if you don't trust the shit owner of ddg) - which mixes your search with others and proxies your search, so youre never actually bindable to any of your searches
