@runfrodorun I always thought there was some extra measure, and it is encpryting. I'll probably encrypt my stuff when I start to use sensitive info and work. Right now it's all videogames and programming tutorials.

@runfrodorun Full disk encryption is becoming more of a default, in all desktop and mobile systems. Although I still use home directory encryption only on most machines.
@gitcommit You don't get the password from passwd, just the username. -
@runfrodorun Agreed! Although with laptops it's almost mandatory in my opinion.

Update: I finally got around to figuring this out. I dropped into root shell, and ran `ls /home`. Voila, username remembered. I then successfully logged in and reinstalled Ubuntu desktop (the accidental deletion of which prompted this whole escapade in the first place).
Back in the game, yo.
