Whats wrong with updates?

@sebastian it's not the updates, it's that they force them on you at the most inopportune times and disrupt your workflow

@watzon tbh. Updates will always interrupt the workflow, as you're always using the laptop. I mean, if they do it while you're shutting it down its also interrupting because youre about to do something else.

They could put as a background service though. At a chance of more bugs during installation.

Common guys just set the BLOODY update time for like 3 am... Problem solved... But if you are always busy even during night or unable to save your work than you deserve worse than that...

@watzon I don't want to defend Microsoft but You have weeks to do it before it starts crying...

@barptad and if you're not busy at 3am your PC is probably off so you can't update then either.
But there's no way in hell the part of the update that needs to be done outside of the OS or in safe mode or something like that lasts more than a few seconds so why the hell not update everything in the background and then just switch over the bits you can't do on the fly during boot. Almost no downtime and practically instant updates...

Guys, trust me, you REALLY want those updates ;)

@Bikonja so the base line here is that you have time, now what method you choose is up to you, If you really concerned you should get Windows pro (should have it if you are developer anyway) allows you to defer updates or Enterprise and then you live without updates for years unless it's critical.

@Jop- Quite a few Linux distros can even swap the kernel while running, and don't need reboots at all anymore. And most package managers can throttle resource usage (such as network bandwidth) as well, so you barely notice it.

Pretty sick of seeing people complain about Windows needing a restart to update. Yes we all know that Linux doesn't need to be restarted, and that is great. Really it is. But I think if you look at systems outside of computers, such as Phones, Tablets, Wearables etc you would find that most of them, if not all, require a restart between updates.

Just really grinds my gears to see so many people crying because a restart is required when windows needs to update. And what is even more annoying is when it's compared to other OS' like Linux. Why can't you just let them be different, always comparing and contrasting.

Final note, I do 100% agree that the pop-ups as shown in their gif are annoying, and always appear at the wrong time, so Microsoft should look at this. Anyways comment rant over.

@MaccaMc I think an operating system is something people rely on for their jobs to always be available.

If you need to hold a presentation for 50 coworkers, you turn on your laptop and it hangs on "configuring updates", that's unacceptable.

If you need to finish a report before a deadline, and it says: "Going to restart in 10m", that's unacceptable.

The problem isn't just the reboot, it's also the lack of control over the process and the unpredictable duration.

Microsoft can prioritize modernization of their OS in any way they want. But updates & availability are the main reasons my previous 3 employers chose combinations of cloud/chromebook & OSX for office applications — and it's something that pisses of enough people that it pops up as a recurring meme all over the internet.

@bittersweet yeah, I upgraded my laptop (debian) from Jessie to Sid (or stretch? I keep mixing them up). Took me 20 minutes or so (inc. dl), and wasnt forced to reboot. I just went on with my business until I decided to shut down. 😀

@dontbeevil I don't want to restart my PC ever. I own it and I will restart it when I fucking want. My active hours are 24/7 and i don't want any updates. I never lost any work because of wannacry but I did lose it because Windows 10 decided to KILL MY RUNNING APPLICATIONS in order to restart the PC. Really, what the fuck man, you seriously think that it's OK for the OS to kill users applications without their explicit approval for ANY reason?

@pajaja if you have such critical workload, I truly doubt, get the Enterprise version and stop crying please, thanks.

@barptad So now if you have a software that you don't want to be terminated by malware in Windows 10, that is considered 'citical' software by you? Can I disable windows updates in Enterprise version like in Windows 7, and is Enterprise version available as a single licence?

@barptad Windows 10 LTSB is the only version which guarantees full control over updates, and you can't obtain it legally without a special volume license.

@bittersweet agreed, however all Enterprise versions have more control over updates even with the E3 package you gained way more control. And if you need to operate 24/7 getting an Enterprise license should not be a hurdle. BTW getting it is not that complicated you just need to be a company or work at a decent company...

@Jop- I just don't understand your expectations... You want to use a customer product as a webserver and then complain about it. Moving to Linux that workload is the right decision if you can't afford licensee, but then again, I would like to do many things too, that I can't afford, but that is not the fault of the service providers...

Lol this exploded. I personally use both Windows and Linux, for me, I use windows for everything I would consider "normal pc use" such as gaming, web browsing, word processing etc.

I also personally use Windows to code, however it doesn't matter what OS I use for this as all the JetBrains IDE's I use function the same on each.

I use Linux (not including Android etc) for projects on Raspberry PI and always on software such as servers.

TL;DR What I am getting at is that every OS has its use cases, and I wouldn't think of running a web server for example on a Windows (non server) machine. But equally I wouldn't game on Linux because Windows is much better suited.

People need to stop committing to using one OS for everything and slating others. Like the amount of work people will go to, just to make software work on Linux (using wine etc) that is so easy to do on another OS is ridiculous. Use the OS that best suits the task.

Yes Windows has its flaws. As does Linux, OSX, Android...
