First Windows and now Apple. Why does everyone keep skipping the number 9?

Windows made it, because some software crashes with win9 names.

Cause they are rebels... They don't respect the rules, as they do not respect a decent price for a fuckin phone...

Hmmm ios 9 is surely from Apple

The official reason from Microsoft is 7 8 9. But if I'm not wrong 9 is an unlucky number in Asia. Maybe it has something to do with that.

@azuredivay apparently #9 is a curse word in China lol

Apple did it because it's their 10th anniversary

Because 7 8 (ate) 9. Or officially from Microsoft during their initial keynote, there was already a Windows One (referring to windows 1.0). Honestly they should of stuck with Windows One, fits in with everything else.
Apple did X because 10th Anniversary but really it could of been anything else.

Because a lot of XP+ era applications use a very lose version check to the effect of "OS.Version.StartsWith ("Windows 9")" to decide if the OS was not NT compatible.
Had they gone to Windows 9, a whole bunch of applications would have suddenly stopped working.

4 is unlucky in China because it sounds like death so it is superstitiously avoided. Not sure about 9.

I think it has something to do with competition.

OSX (10) vs Windows 9 sounds like Apple is further ahead. Firefox started pushing versions into the dozens when Chrome did it. iPhone 8 & X is about an anniversary, but also prevents just lagging behind Galaxy S8.

@bittersweet Sounds reasonable. Turns out Google's versioning of Angular isn't that confusing then ;)
