Do you think it's possible to get enough of a following on YouTube and twitch to fund your living expenses and use the rest of your free time to work on your own studio projects?

For example I'm a VR and AR game developer. I do the whole shebang for game development and design on my own. I could stream play throughs of the current game I'm working on as a weekly thing and create tutorial videos for other developers and students for more content on my channel, but to also stimulate growth in the VR and AR industry. I'd in a way be creating my own market. I could also stream the development of the art assets and whatnot.

Could possibly make some money from the ads at first. Maybe even within the game?

Idk I'm trying to avoid having to get a job anywhere else if I can float my own success as an indie start up. So thoughts on this rant please?

Watching other youtubers earnings I would say that if you have hundreds of thousands of subscribers that generate revenue from ads, and if other companies want to promote their product in your videos then yes, you might live from YouTube earnings.
If you have time and dedication to gather a large user base of subscribers and gain trust between product promoters, then go ahead. But it will take a while (probably years).

@CoffeeAndHate on top of selling assets and hopefully traffic from whatever game I'm selling?

I was speaking about YouTube only. But of course, you can have revenue from other sources too, which will be ideal and probably faster.
So yeah, I say it is possible to live only from your own work. Might be tough and hard, but that depends on you.

I have very little first-hand experience but it seems more reasonable to do it the way you do rather than just being an aspiring youtuber/twitch steamer who wants to make a living playing games. It's a good way to market games for sure, if they are good, or look fun to play.

There are a few articles you can read on being successful on both platforms, from what I've read, the most consistent advice for Twitch is to broadcast consistently at specific times.

Wish you luck, hopefully someone with more experience here can help. Like I say, there's a wealth of info a search away on your favourite engine.
