yeah it's bad.
It can have some merit to it tho.
For example when yet another USB Standard comes around, and you have manufactured the cables already. If you then validate, that your USB 3.1 cables are also 3.2 capable, you can technically sell them as such, even if it says on the tin, that it's 3.1 still. -
hjk10157311y@thebiochemic that is why CAT standaard is so nice. Its about the the cables rated effectiveness not an arbitrary protocol (that does need some guarantees but that's not good enough). It's become nearly impossible to find the correct USB cable. Especially if you need thunderbolt or other specific features you have to wade through a shitload of cables to order presumably one that actually works.

No, this is amazing. It's how I used to get free cat5e cables from eBay. Order a cat8 one, complain to eBay when it's inevitably cat5e, refund.
-
@Nanos They're definitely stiffer than CAT5 as they have an inner plastic spacer - but mine go around corners just fine.
Not sure about CAT8, I've never had a reason to work with it. -
@Nanos Tounge in cheek, but several times I've messaged the seller and stated it's a refund unless they want me to raise a case with eBay. I always offer to return it, but usually for patch cables or electronic components that aren't as described it's not worth their hassle, so they just tell me to keep it.
Seeing CAT5 Cables sold as CAT8 cables makes me think how many non techies have been scammed and don't even know it.
Like when apple marketed the 3rd gen PoS iPad as the new iPad and people starting for years after selling new ipads that were anything but.
To people who do this kindly fuck off
