In a rants comments I came to the idea (yet again) of doing a kind of devRant meetup in the Netherlands! Would any fellow dutchies be in for this and if yes, lets discuss some details in the comments!

@linuxxx Oh and if someone comes up with the idea of creating a group whatsapp chat for this (this is very common in the netherlands), please also use another medium or keep me in the loop because I do not use whatsapp due to privacy concerns :)

Moving the meetup to Germany? Somebody tried that 75 years ago, didn't work. (though i love Germany, you have all the great festivals and crazy people)

@luminousnine @Codex404 I like the idea of threema but I don't trust it. Their app/crypto is closed source and for a 'secure trusted and privacy friendly' messaging app, that's a general no-go. Keep using it if you like though! Not trying to make you switch or something :).

@linuxxx main phone is Windows Phone.

My other phone without phonenumber is a rooted LG G2 without google things.

@Codex404 Ahh windows phone! I'm not even sure if riot runs on that haha. Tbh I wouldn't be surprised if no privacy based chat app would support windows phone (no offense)

@luminousnine It's more like if Threema is forced to build a backdoor in without telling anyone, they can easily do because the code isn't public anyways. In Signals case the code is public so it would be discovered fast as fuck :)

@linuxxx xD but Microsoft is the only big tech company from the US that tries to follow the European laws of privacy. Google, Apple, Facebook and Twitter don't.

Really MS is working for privacy more than google and the rest

@Codex404 Actually Google is fully European law compliant already! And as soon as they release the source code I'll see if they actually comply :P

@linuxxx did you ever try to request the full profile they have on you? The European law states that if a user requests to see all collected data about him or herself the company is required to share that data.

Facebook wont do this
Google wont do this
Twitter wont do this
Apple wont do this

MS did it without asking more questions than proof about who I was (which you are required to give to get the data)

@Codex404 Well as the only thing I use as for social networking next to devRant is Twitter, I don't know about the others but I've never looked into that part to be honest. Still I'd never ever use a windows phone but let's get back to the messaging thingies :).

We could also use something else I know but that one is solely peer to peer.

Edit: just searched and not available on windows phone either.

@Codex404 Ohh I thought you were looking for a mobile app specifically!

@Codex404 By default, the messages aren't encrypted but you can turn that on with like one mouse click which I did for a linux/FOSS/privacy/security chat. It's actually pretty easy to use.

Yeah in that case I think Riot.im is pretty close to alright/usable with a level of privacy I can work with. Let me know if you/other people are okay with this :). @Codex404

@KidLaser In general the problem with WhatsApp is that, although it's 'end to end encrypted', you hardly need any content if you already have shit tons of metadata. whapp saves everything it can on metadata. Next to that, it's owned by FB which should ring a few privacy bells, it's closed source and uses a closed source implementation of the Signal (aka Double Ratchet) crypto protocol which I don't trust. That's it in a nutshell :)

@linuxxx Yeah I just started doing some reading - thanks man, I am a firm believer in everything open source has to offer but I do find it increasingly difficult when the discussion moves to mobile applications. However the FB thing shouldve rang a bell with me immediately, unfortunately I installed it blindly with no prior knowledge of anything about it(gf insisted...pussy-whipped I know).
Also if you don't mind, I'd like to catch a glimpse at what you and @ewpratten are currently working on...got a github, or similar vcs? I'd like to know what this tool does...I'm your biggest fan, even if I had any constructive criticism I probably wouldn't tell you about it for fear of being critical towards you senpai. 😍😂😂
