@Kimmax I wanted it to be about desktop applications in general (*cough* electron), browsers just happen to be the worst.
The shell shouldn't use half a gig either. -
sumzor407yIt's really strange sometimes, just started the browser and opened a self written page without js, a simple css and the browser takes 600+ MB already...

I can't understand why so many people complain about RAM usage. It was made to be in use. Not to be at 10%
-
@Scrumplex because most GCs are garbage (no pun intended).
I understand that caching some extra things in RAM can make it faster, but when I want to run another VM, I should get that RAM back.
Instead, my shell gets swapped and I need to kill something via SSH to get it to respond. -
@franga2000 well. I don't know how much RAM you have. Oh btw. if you need to have a Linux VM you could use LXC. Way better than a VM. Oh and ++ for KDE :D (Which distro?)
-
@Scrumplex I have 8GB. I should upgrade, but I'd have to buy a whole kit since my board only has 2 slots.
I do use LXC wherever I can, but I haven't managed to get it to work with a full desktop environment in a window.
Great to find someone who likes KDE - we seem to be a dying breed. I'm running Arch here and Antergos everywhere else. -
@franga2000 I don't think the KDE community is dying off. Since KDE neon many people like me got attracted to KDE again. I used to use Kubuntu, but back then Linux was not for me. I was somewhat a 24/7 gamer.
The reason why most people don't like KDE is because of 5.6. It was the most buggy version of KDE and if someone thinks of KDE he probably thinks of 5.6. But the plasma desktop got way better since then. I would say, that KDE is the best choice atm, without preconceptions. -
@Scrumplex I guess It feels that way sometimes because I mostly know old-timers who last tried KDE 4 or even 3. KDE hate was basically a meme for a while.
I agree it's the best choice, too bad it's very rarely the default.
This is the state of desktop computing: When a web browser uses twice more RAM than a full virtual machine.
To be fair, I did have 5 windows with >10 tabs each, but still...
