I haven't hit driver issues in a long time, and I run Debian. Saying that I usually don't plug new hardware in too often.
-
Is it really that bad? I switched to Linux only 2 weeks ago, but I haven't had any issues with the Nvidia drivers.
-
@1n9i9c7om actually it depends mostly on the desktop environment, and if it's only Nvidia or Optimus,

Ironically All Nvidia cards work flawlessly for me since 2006 when I first got into Linux with my trusty geforce fx5200. All 9 of them! Not even a glitch. I only had 2 machines with ATI card and had to jump through hoops to make em run...

esavier4017yI don't think you know what you are saying. I have sli GTX1080 and testing version of Debian. Works great, even with Steam. If you know what you are doing, everything works on linux.

Falk3117yyeah nvidia normally works, but dont even think of VM's with hardwarepassthrough, niewieder blocked it in their driver
Vm.detected? Then block driver -
@runfrodorun yes I know that but this is what puzzles me. If so much could be done by reverse engineering and guesswork alone, ATIs open policy would mean that ATI cards would have to be near perfect on Linux when in a lot of cases even basic features don't work.

On Mint, having some flickering issues while watching even something like a movie@1n9i9c7om

I read it and I agree somewhat, but there are butts: To be clear nouveau is shitty, an I am not using it, it sucks big time. For the arm and ppc, yeah, but those are energy efficient machines, you won't install Nvidia with those, and if you did, you suck more than open drivers. You do rather integrated stuff for those. For powered up PC's, Nvidia blobs work great. I am using it both on personal workstation and servers. The instance when Nvidia disappointed me is yet to come, and I am hardcore unix user.
BTW, radeon won't disappoint you because there is nothing to expect from those. There is no problem if there is no feature 🤣
Two most contradicting terms.
1. Linux
2. Nvidia
