My manager (who is a PhD) says that the difference between probability and percentage is that the former ranges from 0 to 1 and the latter ranges from 0 to 100.

Now the only question I have is, "Where can I buy PhD?"

    Infact that is correct. Probability of 1 means it's chances are 💯 percent

    That is correct…

    That's correct

    That's not correct,
    While it is true that probability ranges from 0 to 1 and percent from 0 to 100 probability is not the ONLY thing one can express with percent

    0-1 = 0-100 (Probability in relation to percentage), so yeah, I'm on the manager's side

    guys, "per cent" is latin and literally means "divided by hundred". 1 = 100% (100/100)

    Well, I think this proves why he is your manager 😉

    Many people here seem to have the potential to be your manager 😝

    Probability means chance or likelihood.
    Percent is a measure.
    Different concepts.
    If i a glass is 50 percent full we cant say its 0.5 probability...

    Statistically talking it's a common use to normalize all the results in charts. The events space it's usually symbolically 1 and all the event's probabilities are in a range between 0 and 1. Think about a binomial distribution and Bernoulli formula, if the probability is't a value < 1 you'll get a divergent result when N goes to +infinity.

    @jhokkar Yes, I don't think anyone is confusing the concepts. But in terms of how you measure them, probabilities in mathematics naturally assume a value between 0..1. Probabilities can be represented as a percentage by multiplying them by 100. A percentage is just a way of representing a value "out of 100".

    So he's not wrong. That's all I'm saying.

    @localghost Oh god, I had a class on this kind of math last semester. I passed with a good mark (9/10), but I don't understand what you said completely. Maybe I should read the courses again.

    @Jijel that's 0.9%, right?

    @Jijel What kind of school are you going to?

    I think it's a kind of joke that's sort of an anti joke

    @configurator 90% actually.

    @NavCon Computer Science, first year we had a lot of math. First semester was algebra and calculus, second was a bit calculus or analysis (hope I spelled it right and that is the right name) and statistical math. And the math in the second semester was 1 class divided in those 2 categories. It was a lot of information for 1 semester, but the teacher was amazing and we left with some really good knowledge.

    @rookiemaverick It's not the difference then, it's the similarity between those two.

    @jhokkar This is what I was expecting. 👍

    My manager's point is that you can not represent probability in percentage.
  • 1
    @ngrjs can you contestualize the sentence, maybe in your application case you can't but usually the percentage or normalized events partition are equal

    @Jijel that was humor.
