Me: Can I have PhpStorm please.
Company: Is it free?
Me: No, but it's the best php IDE out there. It's a huge productivity boost and also helps avoiding bugs while refactoring.
Company: Nope. Use Zend Studio 9.
Me: Why?
Company: We paid money for it like two years ago.
Me: <contemplating life and my decision to ever work there>

To whomever it may concern: Zend Studio is the commercial brother of Eclipse PDT, which also is one of the most shittiest idea out there. Almost as bad as Netbeans for php.

You have all the problems you had with eclipse, and none of the features of phpstorm. Zend Studio does not help you to get work done. It is a constant hindrance, everything you achieve you achieve despite its usage.

    Wish I could share my JetBrains lic... I only use DataGrip and ReSharper... snif.

    @Nelson I don't work there anymore. I now ask in the job interview what tools I'll be working with and declare phpstorm to be my requiremnet if it's a php job. If that's a problem: roflcoptr gtfo.

    @Sauruz My observation after using different IDEs by Jetbrains, apart from Clion, all of them combine into IDEA Ultimate with Plug-ins.
    So yes, PHP storm is stripped down the IntelliJ ultimate with PHP plug in.

    Not exactly "stripped". PhpStorm is slightly adjusted to be more comfortable with PHP than IntelliJ.
    JetBrains folks stated once that their dedicated versions have cool features faster than generic IntelliJ.

    Anyway, PhpStorm is worth the money. Tbh, I bought it myself and use it at office since it's ok with the license.

    Pro Hint: apply to a college, get a college email. Go to jetbrains get the student discount (free). Download all the things. Ignore the school if they reach out to you.

    @tisaconundrum elaborated, and i doubt the school gives you an email address unless you register (i.e. pay).

    There's a free RC version. It's hidden on the site but free as it could be buggy.

    The license is also really easy to fake btw...

    My company bought the all products license, but before that I had my own. It's only a little bit over €10/m for one product, and after 12m you get a lifelong fallback license.

    For a tool you use every day, it's cheap — although I agree it's the kind of thing which should be provided by the employer.

    @pagongski granted I paid $34 for the application. Sooo... For that amount for all software seems rather reasonable.

    @Sauruz The plug-in give you basically the same features, it's just that the dedicated version are more up to date and more refined. It depends on your environment what's more fitting for you.

    @bittersweet I'll pay for my IDE if I ever should become a freelancer. Otherwise I expect my company to provide me with the best tools money can buy. Or I work elsewhere in the future.

    I love Phpstorm, and webstorm if I'm.just doing front end stuff. And for the price of an annual subscription it's well worth it. I also use pycharm, and Rubymine if I'm working in those languages...
