I need to decide about my new job:
+ 20% more salary
+ better job/role
+ 1 or 2 days in the office by average per week
- no more 100% remote

Accept or no? I have been working from home for 3 years

For me a 20% hike is not worth infinite% more commute.

@mansur85 you can see the world also if you're 100% remote and choose to do so. In fact, you can see a lot more variety of you so desire.

How long does it take you to go from home to work and back? How many h/d do you waste with commuting?

It really depends on whether the work environment matches your needs. You probably already optimized the environembt at home - but will likely not be able to change a lot in the new workplace. So there is a risk, that the place turns out to be shit.

Having a decrease of 40 percent points from 100% down to 60% of the remote workdays might or might not be worth the 20% increase in salery. Depends on how much you need that raise and how much you would enjoy the new work more than the current one.

@happygimp0 it will be 2.5 hours per day, but Iam allowed to come flexible, as in later thanrush hours, or earlier than normal exit if I am done.

I guess in the end it has to do with what kind of commute you gotta do.

1h per trip by car could be passable for me, after all, I just pick an album and sing away... But no booze after work, which is no no.

1h per day in a train? If the trains are decent *and* there's a good timetable (meaning being able to return after after work booze), I'd be okay with it too.

A 25 min walk is fine, *if* they let me stay at home when it's raining. I fucking hate rain.

Anything else would be an automatic no go.

@aviophile take it and good luck! You said it will be 2.5h per day, I suppose you mean commute, but in the non-rush hours can't you shave off another 30mins? It will change your life a little bit, for the better maybe. You've been there before and maybe you forgot what you used to like about being at the office. At least that's how I felt after 2 years of covid isolation.
I really enjoy exchanging ideas in-person with my peers and having laughs, missing it really affects my well-being etc.

@webketje yeah, I probably will say yes. But rush hour or bot, i won’t save time. Trains run on time but I will find a good seat that’s for sure.

@aviophile This is 5h per week more or about 11% more worktime (From 45h to 50h), which is less than 20%. In other words, payment per hour work+travel is higher at the new job.

Also, you probably can use the time on the train, for things like eating. Which means overall the new jobs looks better from that perspective.

I forgot, the trainticket cost something. If have to subtract the price from your salary increase (after tax).

L0= your current wage after tax

L1= The new wage after tax - train ticket

Lu= (L1-L0)/L0 # The relative gain in wage

Z0= Your current time spend for work per week

Z1= New new time you will spend for work per week + time travelling for work per week

Zu = (Z0-Z1)/Zu # The relative increase in working + travelling time

If Lu is bigger than Zu, you will get more money per hour invested (work and travelling) in the new job than you do currently.

It's a better job with higher salary and, to be honest, in the long run those 1-2 days at the office will only do you good.

One downside is no more lounging in your pants (still can when working from home)
