@g-m-f
Everyday...
• 1 hour+ in traffic to work
• 9 and a half hours at work
• 1 hour+ in traffic back home
The half hour is for lunch which I, for the most part, have in front of my computer anyway.
But that's a total of 11½ hours total... EVERY FUCKING DAY!!!
It's putting huge strain on me, my mental and emotional state, which in turn is affecting my marriage! -
@g-m-f
And there's no hope for me commuting by train in this God-forsaken 3rd world country! -
ymas4717yNothing is more important than your health. Money comes and goes, health doesn't. Stress is really bad. In the current economic climate, HR might sympathise but there isn't much they're going to do. I bit the bullet and went freelance. My quality of life has improved dramatically. If you can, definitely take the leap of faith. Well worth it.

@ymas
I'm down with that, I really really am. And nothing would give me greater pleasure than working freelance/for myself.
Unfortunately, I am not in any position financially to just up and leave and venture out in the wild blue yonder!
Ya know... those pesky things called bills ain't gonna pay themselves. -
ymas4717y@GinjaNinja totally understand. It took me two years to muster the courage to do it. I started talking and dealing with customers to get a better understanding of the social aspects of owning a business. If customers aren't stressed they are a lot more pleasant to deal with. If managers sell unrealistic deliverables and treat their tech teams like doormats, everyone loses. The fun goes down the drain and a pall of darkness descends. Hope you find a more suitable job and your marriage is unaffected. All the best.

could you reduce your pensum? like working from monday to wednesday and thursday and friday doing freelance work for europeans?
-
@heyheni
It's first a case of finding said customers, all while still having to pay the bills. -
f03n1x65797yFor me it's a 40 min train ride + 20 bus ride followed by a 20 min walk.
Though the walk is optional I walk so I both wake up and have some time to think about what I'll be doing at work/when I get home.
Definitely helps plus it's also the only real exercise I get :/
I leave at 5:30ish and get home at 6:30ish, also because of daylight savings it's dark when I leave in the morning and dark when I get home :(
(Also reason to not much exercise, not much time when I get home (lol excuses) though I used to do running, but my area has quite a lot of traffic plus being dark, and not a safe place at night :/) -
@f03n1x
What are your working hours if you're out at 05:30 and back home at 18:30? -
f03n1x65797y@GinjaNinja 8am to 4:30pm I leave at 5:30ish and get a ride to the train station, get the 6am train, arrive in town at 6:45ish, walk to the bus stop and get the 7am bus, then at around 7:20 I arrive at a bus station down the road from my job, then walk for about 20 minutes.
For going home same thing, though a friend drops me off at the bus station so I sometimes avoid the 20min walk, but it's 4:40 bus then 5:15 train (that is if I get dropped off lol, otherwise 5pm bus 5:45 train). Oh and then walk for about 10 minutes to get home. Now the fact the houses are being built on the corner of the road I live on I have to walk around so it'll be 15-20 min home.
Hence why I want a job closer to home lol, I mean at least going to town would be okay, that way I can get a bit more sleep/have more time to work on VR game. -
@f03n1x
13 hours out of the house! That's craziness!!!
I think the only saving grace for me in that situation would be that I am not driving/stuck in traffic. You're pretty sure of the times you'll get where you need to be and how long it before you get there.
Being stuck in traffic, with roadworks all over the place and just general congestion ain't fun and the unpredictability of it all doesn't help things along either!
Hope you find something a little closer to home! 😉 -
f03n1x65797y@GinjaNinja oh for New Zealand there isn't much congestion for the bus and well train is one track where on the odd occasion we sit and wait for a train to go past. The bus is for going over the harbor bridge, which then had specific lanes for the buses, which saves me any waiting in traffic. Then it stops at designated bus stations, though the last one has a crap ton of traffic (glad I miss out on that lol), I like that though walking to the bus station I dodge so much traffic, it's so hectic in Auckland.
Not to mention the inflated prices for houses, taxes and just everything in general.
I really hope I find something closer too, and I hope for your sake you find something that helps your situation. I come home to work on my VR game or play overwatch for stress, but a proper job would a more permanent fix lol.
Speaking of my game I'll post it up when I'm happy with it :D
Oh and here's some hectic traffic going from North shore to Auckland city, it goes on forever lol.
