As a student (skipped a couple years, but should be in highschool), my district was the first to distribute laptops to thier students. Many as you said treated it poorly.
Reason? They're spoiled.
Almost all the students in my grade wanted $700+ laptop performance when they refuse to realize hundreds of students need laptops as well. Most spoil their children with super expencive laptops, and they compare the performance.

@HelmetBro
Well there is a difference between complaining because they are spoiled, and complaining because the computers are actually shit.
People don't like it when I say this, but IT and Administration should always take student concerns into consideration. Students know the computers best, even if IT spent 3 years testing the computers, they will never know how they hold up in class.
Is it to much to ask for a computer that is powerful enough to run Microsoft word? Apparently it is.
Also, slow and unstable computers hinder academic success. (Duh) If a student spends 5 min waiting for Google docs to load, their time is not being used effectively.
Just my two cents.
some students aren't treating their school laptops well at all, today i had a student asking us if he would get a replacement if he "accidentally" gave it a little bath in acid :/
