The last patents on mp3 codecs are expiring, so they've stopped licensing them. People who don't understand what that means are saying mp3 is dead. It's not.

It's no further use makes it dead as it is..here Terminology dead was used to show the fading of mp3 use in as layman as possible.
People who don't know about it probably won't notice the change...

@Kro9k No, when the patents expire anyone can use them, just as when patents expire on drugs generics become available. You will soon no longer have to pay anyone for the privilege of decoding mp3s. I suppose there's a small window right now where you can't bring a new product to market the plays them, but when the last patent expires at (I think) the end of the year, that's no longer an issue.
