Branches should grow plentiful, but give them fresh sap from the trunk often. Cherry picking can help if you're hungry for something sweet in a remote branch. When your tree is sick, sometimes you'll have to prune it a little using bisect. Push and pull branches often to make them strong against failure, grow them in any way you like, but never splice the fundamental fibrous structure into something it wasn't before.
