I'm a computer engineering student.
I'm very much interested in Systems and networking.
That's why I was thinking of persuing cyber-security as a career option.
But I'm not quite sure if that is a good choice.
Also I don't know how to proceed in order to achieve excellence in cyber-security.

It would be a great help if you guys could help me.

Search for security conferences and try to attend one or two per year. They're well worth it, networking and a lot of knowledge exchange at those events.

Talk to people in the field, they are very friendly. read a lot. Apply to junior positions - they need people desperatly, and will teach you, if you show that you can learn and apply.
Just make sure you understand, junior cybersec get paid very little. You could make a lot more money as a dev.

@bugHunter when you have the experience, then the pay can go very high. But you need to.prove that you are good first.

Bud, I say go for it! Before I became a cyber security specialist I was hacking for the lulz and the wrong reason... It took getting sent to prison to straighten me out and to make me realize that what I was doing could totally benefit the world and I would be making legal money lol. There is ALWAYS going to be a high demand for penetration testers my man, the way tech is being pushed out, exploits and bugs are being pushed out even faster because tech industries are looking for their next buck totally disregarding what doors their opening up to black hats. I say go for it my man and if you need anything, hit me up; it would be my pleasure!

@AnonyOps can you tell me how can I start working on it? Right now I don't know how to get started. I find lot of tutorials online, but get confused as to which tutorial I should follow.

Your guidance would be of immense help.

If I were you I would first learn the ins and outs of networking and things of the nature. You want to have a strong understanding of the thing you'll be attacking. Set up a test lab, work through things and do extensive research, Google anything that catches your eye or spikes your interest.

Does your current school offer any cyber security classes? Talk to that professor, see what they recommend.

I am a hands on learner, that's why earlier in life I paid the price lol. I find taking apart things to see how they work intriguing. A lot of my findings were just trial and error but don't get caught up in the "error" part like I.

See if there is an internship at any of the security places around you, even if you have to drive a ways... I promise, the experience you will gain from it will be worth it in the long run.

Finally, believe in yourself and don't give up. It's a difficult and confusing road at times but stick with it, it'll show you reward in the end.

Yeah, I'm trying to get an internship in some security companies like Symantec.

Also I'm gonna get CEH certification as well in the next month.

@bugHunter I've got a few friends that work there, I can't remember their roles exactly but I'll see if they have any pull on internships. Not sure where you're from but if you are anywhere in Texas, right now Austin and Dallas are BOOMING with tech companies going up left and right from all different fields! If you have the time, look into two different internships, if they would let you, go for both at the same time, network admin/system admin intern work along with a cyber security internship, two birds with one stone mate.
