Or you could tell him why they left, and say it bothers you too, but a raise could make you forget about that! -
If you're doing more than your contract states or getting more responsabilities than you should have, it is a good ideia.
Just put the reasons why you want the raise in a formated document and pratice some speech before the talk, bosses are usualy very evasive.
Remember that getting a raise is not a shot and miss thing. It's more like a marathon, where you'll need to talk more than once about the subject and show more and more why you deserve it. Talking from experience. -

Base your request on performance. Ask for a periodic review, talk about what you achieved *even thou* there are 2 ppl less in the area.
