When I was in kindergarten, five years old, I took the long way home. Instead of leaving the schoolyard the front way and turning left and getting home in two minutes, I left by the back, took a right, and strolled through the streets East of school, then turned right and then left. I felt like hot shit. When I got home my mother was beside herself with panic. I mean, I still remember her expression 58 years later.

Kids are like drugs. You know they are bad for you. But then you try them out of curiosity. You regret it but it’s too late. You can’t live without them anymore. They destroy your life and there is nothing that you can do about it.
