Somehow I enjoy creating flawlessly working nifty utilities a lot more than writing actual business code.

It's that versatility and reusability of a well-written utility that makes it suitable for many use-cases that puts a smile on my face.

A single-purpose business and use-case-specific piece of code doesn't do it for me anymore. I guess it never did, really...

I wish I could get paid for building tools rather than business apps :)

Same here. I wonder if anybody feels the other way around.

There was a time, at my old job, when my main responsibility was writing and maintaining productivity tools for our team to use. I've never been happier with my job than then.

I miss being able to write small bits of code that just worked and had few if any bugs due to their simplicity. Nowadays I spend 90% of my time maintaining code written by people who left the company and it's horrible.
