I'm so glad I started off doing graphic design in middle school. Makes me a double threat.

I suck at it, generally, but with enough time, a lot of bootstrap and stealing open source colour palettes, I managed to get something good looking. I posted my site somewhere if you wanna pick it apart for ideas and inspiration.
