When you're using a sophisticated software and you've shown your work to your non-dev friends and they say "Wow! What APP did u use?"

Furk it! App sounds like a small icon on your mobile phone to take a selfie putting a dog filter to post for everyone to see! You call this tool just an "APP"? May Zeus forgive this blasphemy.

I think of it this way:
In the context of a smart phone, an app is an app as you mean it here.

In any other context, app is just short for application. Just pretend they said application.

But honestly, this is kind of the same thing as someone saying they "downloaded" an application when the meant "installed" or vice versa. In the end it doesn't matter and shouldn't really bother you.

Fucking Microsoft does this. Read their certified c# books or whatever, they're all 'app' this, 'app' that. It drove me nuts. Now, app is just sort for application.

A few years ago in 5th grade I had an argument win a friend that computers can have apps on them. He said "apps only work on phones." I said "no, app stands for application and can be on computers too." The lesson is, don't be stubborn if you're not educated.
