It's presumably for some very rare edge case that doesn't arise in modern society such as genuine satisfaction untainted with gluttony. The reason it goes off after death is that there's absolutely no evolutional pressure on a dead animal so the brain reacts pretty much arbitrarily. The behavior of an animal who can't affect the survivability of their peers and can't reproduce has a reason but no purpose.
