I like vim because it works correctly with sudo, in containers, over SSH. I don't have to think about accessing a file. VSCode works in containers and it can deploy a minor occupying army of host processes on a server so that it works over SSH too, but it doesn't work with root and even if it did it would be a huge vulnerability to allow a GUI application root access, particularly one which has plugin support.
-
Also Vim is the only editor I've seen so far where I can have the editor take up the whole screen except for a single row while still being able to switch files and navigate the file system quickly and easily. This capability is priceless on a laptop, as well as the option to do absolutely anything without the touchpad.
-
@lbfalvy whatever works for you man.
Nice explaination, unlike most fanboys who wants you to switch to vim just because it is cool. -
@iiii Really then remove the mouse from ur pc
this is the crap i was talking about
what dominance?
only insecure piece of shit talk about fucking dominance -
iiii92263y@rajadohare I dunno. That's their main point of dominance: not using a tool in a gui environment which is designed for that guy environment in the first place
-
@iiii i see lots of people to look cool code in vim
but at the end they loose out rich feature of IDE and waste their and our time -
Not sure why you need to be pissed about it. It's not like you need to use it. It's like being angry at helicopters, because you don't like flying them.
I use vim because it's powerful file editor. And it's even more practical, if you (have to) spend a lot of time in the terminal. -
Linux438103y@rajadohare
I am using VIM daily, since it works good for me. And since some of the systems I work on does not have VIM - but usually VI - it is convenient -
Wether it's pico, vi, nano, joe, ... - you should be able to use a CLI and thus a CLI editor.
It doesn't mean you have to use them all the time... But you should be able to use it when there's a necessity
Dunno how often I coded remote sth up or unbotched a production server or was simple to annoyed at setting up for a trivial edit a remote IDE workflow...
But in my opinion, when you rely on sth to exist all the time, you will regret it sooner or later. If I got a dollar for every day a new recruit needs to relearn his workflows cause company doesn't sponsor his favorite tool ... I wouldn't work anymore.
Even more terrifying are those who don't even know what they're doing cause they're entirely gridlocked to the IDE.
(E.g. "clicking" together SQL statements, setting up SSH Key Auth, stuff like that). -
Angry15703yPeople who complain about people who vi for no reason in 2021 can go fuck themselves in the ass.
Did I mention I use Arch? -
@Angry Doesn't make u smarter
people like u are bunch of loosers who still use bullcart when they have faster vehicle
Shove that arch in ur ass -
@Angry Looking for people like you who use piece of garbage and brag about it
if you use arch then its ur problem
smart people uses better os
not waste. time to run. a shitty system -
@Angry And why use smartphone
stick with landline
You are the results if people don't uses modern tech
if you moms lover knew about condoms
we would have one less loose to care about -
Who even uses it as IDE? In most cases, you don't have option, over SSH, to edit few lines of some file.
-
Angry15703y@rajadohare - I DO use vim, it works for me. You use VSCode? I don't care.
I DO use Arch, it makes dev work easier. You use Windows? I guess that /would/ be the obvious choice for you.
I DO use a landline, it's cheaper to make calls on them where I'm from. You use smart phones? I don't care.
I AM smarter than you. Unsubstantiated claim but it does seem to be the case. Oh you say you're smarter? I don't care.
I was clearly talking about people who complain without reason. Now, obviously, I assumed you met someone who was bragging about it. So I tried to poke some fun in and added the Arch joke.
Clearly, you were too angry or too dumb (or both) to have gotten it. So yeah, sit down and stfu, son. -
I'm curious where this anger towards vi/vim comes from. I doubt you're being forced to use it. Or did you arbitrarily decide that the choice of text editor is relevant somehow?
-
@rajadohare Dude, you say you don't care what other people use but both the rant and every comment of yours is so aggressive that I find it hard to believe this. Take a chill pill, no one's causing problems, you're inventing them. If someone is in fact causing problems, call out the problems, don't deny preferences.

@Ubbe This happens when u waste ur time on inferior tech and forgot how world works
for fanboys out there before they trigger
i use linux means a linux distro - Ubuntu
for such people who favours such tech
why not buy 4 wheels and bare metal instead of car
its more configurable -
vi is like McDonald's: shitty, but ubiquitous.
No matter which cockroach infested server shithole you SSH into, vi will be there, and it will work over the terminal The server doesn't have a graphics card or desktop environment installed, because why would it. -
@Ubbe let me explain this
we have few folks who writes everything using vim
even import statement in Java/react
i mean why u waste ur time
when an IDE can do these stuff for u
vim is good for some stuff but using it as IDE and bragging about this is bad behaviour
i mean such people can be replaced by an paid or even free IDE -
Root825083yVi is there on every system I ssh to.
Vi doesn’t need a fancy gui or desktop environment to work.
Vi’s controls are also quite nice once you get used to them.
Vi uses almost no resources, and has zero input lag.
Vi is free and open source.
Vi has plugins that give it all the features you could want.
I can also configure it the way I like it on any machine with two commands, three of it somehow doesn’t have git.
I see no downsides here.
But sure, pretend you’re better with your gigantic, closed-source resource hog IDE that only exists on your particular machine and possibly requires an expensive license. 🤷🏻♀️ -
@Root Closed source interesting
how devs favours free but wants to get paid for their work
hypocrites -
Root825083y@rajadohare “herpa derp I’m trashtaking an editor but also you can’t make money off open source!”
🤦🏻♀️ -
Root825083y@rajadohare Lacking permissions, buddy.
Anyway: amusing ad hominem; means you’re out of arguments. We’re done here.
</thread> -
@Root i am enjoying how people gets triggered especially fanboys
you talks about mac to trigger apple fan boys
and some gets triggered because they are hypocrites and garbage -
@Fast-Nop In my templates vi doesn't exist.
But I think that's a good sign cause my templates are not cockroach infested. XD
@rajadohare this was one of the best threads on how to not make friends on the internet for sure.
🤣 -
@Root We have embedded system without vi..., without nano..., without any damn editor! I hate this shit.
Also, off topic, did you message me from the email you setup? I got a message and was not sure it was spam or not. -
jassole18393yUse whatever the fuck you want lol. I like vi bindings not a terminal vim. Its 2021 for that kind of 90's fanboyism.
-
jassole18393yYes, there are times I need to ssh into boxes but its rare, you can use nano too.
Learn your tools to get your shit done, or your fired. Don't complain about the industry. -
I don't get the hatred for VIM.
If you have good shortcut memory and like the terminal, VIM is perfectly fine. With all its plugins, it can be a full-featured IDE.
If you are more like me - bad memory and liking GUIs more than terminals while being okay with having to use the mouse for some things - VIM is not a good choice.
It seriously heavily depends on user and use case, which editor or IDE is best.
VIM isn't abandonware or outdated. Its UI is just more memorization-oriented instead of being optimized for ease of discovery.
So the real question isn't why to use VIM, but why not go the last step and choose a full editor operating system like emacs instead... -
I think the hatred of vim stems because of those I know who use it because "yeah man I'm cool I can use vim", but don't do anything more than hitting "i" and stabbing a few keys, then exiting it (yeah man, look at me I can exit vim) and running a whole load more commands manually to test it. They take forever and produce complete crap. People like that are bloody infuriating and I wish they'd just use a graphical IDE.
People who use vim properly though - great, go ahead, carry on with whatever editor works for you. -
Angry15703yHere's this thread's summary:
OP just wanted to vent some frustration about colleagues who apparently brag about using vim.
OP feels vim is "garbage" and "old tech".
OP berates vi/vim users, not understanding we were actually together on this.
OP starts "bragging" about "using linux", where "linux = Ubuntu".
OP insists that vi/vim is "garbage tech" and that his preference of an IDE is better.
OP has now become the scum bag that he was ranting about.
OP tries to save face by saying that he just enjoys triggering the "apple fan boys" failing to realize that he was initially triggered by a joke he didn't get.
OP argues that devs using open source are "hypocrites and garbage".
OP has yet to post an actual argument on any of the stances he has taken, instead keeps calling people names and "haha uR s0 tr1gger3d.."
I think we can all agree this should be the end of it. Don't @ me.
People who still use vi in 2021
why stop there why not go fuck yourself in binary editor
devrant
vim vi
