Why is it that so many developers have trash tier hardware? Sometimes I feel like 90% of developers are hardware retards. You work on a computer all day why the fuck are you running one from the early 2,000's that takes a year to boot and can barely run the applications you need? Hardware is a lot cheaper than time and better hardware will save a huge amount of time. And why the fuck do so many devs use laptops? Trashy little craptastic aluminium shit cans folding under the weight of the heat they produce. The more work you do the slower they go. Meanwhile I sit back on my heavily over clocked, water cooled, desktop and fly through workloads that laptop users wouldn't begin to be able to think about. So basically buy a desktop with high end hardware and you'll be amazed what you can get done and how much less painful stuff will be. And if you need to go mobile just grab a Chromebook and remote into your desktop. You'll be happy you did.

    ...and there's this thing called: "no internet access", or "I don't have a shit-ton of money" or even "power failure".

    Chromebook, lol...

    If you're so angry and have so much money to spend, then why don't you be a nice guy and donate them some good hardware? 😑

    1. Water cooled and over clickable desktop is minimum 3000 $.
    2. That much money can bring you an alienware easy, so computing speed is not an issue.
    3. Chromebook lol.

    I feel it's unfair to criticize the ranter unless you've actually lived the situation he's describing. In my organization everyone gets a laptop by default (and a very crappy one at that) and nothing gets done 'cause the damn things can't handle VS Studio plus SQL Developer and SAS Enterprise Guide multitasking. So when I found out my new job role would include analyzing big data and coding, I turned that crap in for a desktop and two monitors.

    Now everyone asks me for query favors 😂

    @sam9669 alienware 😂😂😂
    1. No it doesn't, what are you on about. I got my high end pc for about $1000, and water cooling is not $2000
    2. (See above)
    3. Agreed

    @jens-peter I hate the hardware, not you. It's my opinion that if your main job is to work on a computer for hours everyday you should invest in quality hardware so that the only bottleneck is how much code you can write, not sitting around all day waiting for builds and crap like that.

    @KeyWeeUsr I went into development to not be poor. I work on a computer for at least 40 hours a week and I'll be damned if it's going to be a piss poor experience. And power and Internet outages? Wtf? I don't write code in Siberia or something.

    @asinglenoob

    "I don't write code in Siberia or something."

    Yep, but that's you. Not everyone around is you, nor want to be, so calm your tits.

    Just be thankful you have that kind of set up. For now I use laptop because #1 don't have budget yet, #2 I use PHP, no need to compile to run it. My 6 yr old laptop can handle it good. Hehe

    @asinglenoob fine do whatever development u want with the highly clocked speeds u got, but don't generalise the devs u have met with us, I mean I boot up my device in 1 minute on my 8 year old pc if that's what u wanna hear.

    @sam9669 I could boot a dying Dell Latitude D600 under 20sec. with old Knoppix (<4.0). I recommend you to throw away that modern piece of hardware and get to the same level as the rest of us, cheap pseudo-coders are. ^_^

    @KeyWeeUsr you are right I should get one ASAP. Thanks for the advice.👍👍👍

    In many cases its the employer who is a cheapskate, (i got 2 laptops and one desktop at home that are significantly faster than my work laptop)

    We have shit PCs because that's what our employers give us.

    The devs I know all work on high end hardware. I myself have a last gen i7, 16 GB, 512 GB samsung 950 pro evo SSD + 1 TB HDD, 17.3 inch screen. And thats just my laptop. Also high end desktop.

    @jens-peter
    The fuck he don't hate
    He just asks us to use hardware as a tool
    Like every professional would do!

    I just ssh and use tmux or screen without gui, 1mbit connection + a computer from 2000 is actually an overkill for my needs. Laptops are portable, you can work in the train, on the bus if it's a deadline and in any quiet library. Why being stuck at the same place when you can watch some nature outside while working?

    I agree with OP. Don't put the blame on sb else that your machine is shit, you can get one yourself if you care enough. And you should care if you spend a good chunk of your time in front of that machine. People say don't be cheap with your matress, I say don't be cheap with your hardware.
    Now, I don't think you need fancy stuff like watercooling or overclocking, just make sure you have a good processor, good amount of ram and if possible, an ssd. You can easily get that for under 1000 dollars and it will save you nerves, time and money.

    @thecritic You can build a decent machine under 500€. 8GB ram is pretty much a standard now and ram is cheao. Small ssds are bearable, even cheap (and you don't need ssd as a casual storage), cpu should be the most expensive part. AMD announced recently some cheap stuff too with power of i5 - i7. The rest is just a matter of comfort.
