I ran across this middle school question on Facebook and the most common answer is 9.... I try to have faith in humanity. I really do.... just so its clear (I assume if you're a dev you understand the order of operations and I'm not talking to you), the answer is 59.

    Parentheses
    Exponents
    Multiplication
    Division
    Addition
    Subtraction

    PEMDAS bitches!

    @sariel skrew you

    Brackets,
    Orders,
    Division,
    Multiplication,
    Addition
    Subtraction.

    BODMAS bitches!
  • 6
    (((50 + (10 x 0)) + 7 )+ 2 ) = 59

    BODMAS
    10x0 = 0
    50 + 0 = 50
    50 + 7 = 57
    57 + 2 = 59

    Facebook fuckwhits
    50 + 10 = 60
    60 x 0 = 0
    0 + 7 = 7
    7 + 2 = 9

    And if I'm not mistake, PEMDAS is also 59 for this.

    @C0D4 @sariel Bracket before dot before dash
  • 12
    It's 16, because a YouTube video told me it is.

    Wake up sheeple and do your research! Big Math is a lie to sell more calculators.

    @C0D4 PEMDAS is same as BODMAS with just different terminologies.

    The answer for both, here is same because we don't have division.

    Else the order could change the result, because in PEMDAS, Division comes after multiplication unlike BODMAS.

    This is not even ambiguous, if you don't put brackets, multiplication is supposed to be given priority.
  • 2
    The people who would write their answer in a comment are the same who get it wrong
  • 2
    @sariel actually wrong. Multiplication and division have the same exact precedence as well as addition and subtraction.

    @C0D4 same for you as well

    Punkt vor Strich is all you ever need

    @iiii I do know that. And then it becomes a left to right problem.

    There's no division or subtraction in this though to course that much confusion.

    dumbest people have most kids . Smart people dont have time for kids. THats how dumb people are sperading like virus.

    Dumb people even if do not have time for kids , they do not care, they do not care about their kids future that much also. They just care about fucking and getting money from government for having kids.

    dumb people would be good if they would still be good people. But problem is dumb people often are thieves, killers, etc.

    The answer is fuck you. All other answers are invalid.

    Damn I missed the x... Assumed it was all +s
  • 3
    BODMAS and PEMDAS is exactly the same thing. Only BODMAS uses "brackets" instead of "parenthesis" and "order" instead of "exponent", because compicated words are evil.

    There is no difference in prioritizing division or multiplication. You can (obviously) describe a division by X via a multiplication by 1/X, therefore either approach is equivalent.
  • 1
    @Maer in fact there is no division or subtraction, but only multiplication and addition of "reversed" numbers (negative for addition and 1/x for multiplication)
  • 0
  • 1
    @Maer consider a/b*c

    If you do multiplication first, you end up with a/(b*c), which is the incorrect answer.

    You have to be careful with non-associative operations.

    @electrineer

    4/2*2 = 4

    Isn't it because we reduce fractionals first? So four halves equals two, times two equals four.
  • 0
    It only gets slightly complicated when 1 is used.

    4/2*1

    2*1 or 4/2 would both get you the correct number. This is why it was important to show your work in primary school.
  • 2
    @sariel it's because subtraction and division are left-associative

    4/2/2 = (4/2)/2 ≠ 4/(2/2)
    4-2-2 = (4-2)-2 ≠ 4-(2-2)
  • 3
    @sariel you can divide and multiply at the same time as long as you start from the left

    4*2/2 = (4*2)/2

    But you can divide first as well

    4*(2/2)

    I can't believe I'm explaining this here

    @Angry-dev Idiocracy. Fun flic. 495 years ahead of its time (approx.).
  • 2
    @electrineer You're right. My statement is only correct if displaying division by X through multiplication by 1/X.

    However the general statement BODMAS and PEMDAS being equivalent is still true. Both of them actually state "Multiplication/Division" and "Division/Multiplication", meaning neither prioritizes one over the other and the order of resolving these operators with regard to priority is from left to right.

    But yeah, (a/b)*c is not quivalent to a/(b*c), that much seems clear.

    @30hrs what is ahead of its time?

    no lol

    @Angry-dev because fuck you that's why™

    @hashedram thats incorrect

    Honestly it’s a trick of perceptual psychology

    I raced through it and saw an extra multiplication sign so at first I thought the same lol

    It’s about attention

    Wow. Popular post lol
    I never saw so many people fake argue over middle school math before except the last time this was posted lol

    @electrineer funny me too lol except there was another woman

    amusingly if someone failed at a certain question without training themselves to think more deeply or be more careful, sadly after some time passes they'll do the same thing.

    my mom is a math teacher and she chose to stick to this stage of learning, because kids were getting to high school without knowing this stuff
