A friend sent me a link to a torrent of a documentary. Because of the memory I have of Napster days and my fear of being that one guy that gets caught, plus the constant specter of malware, I've never been brave enough to use torrent links and software, so I've never looked into it. Is it safe these days? How do I do this and what do you all recommend for getting at the content safely?

Torrents aren't really a primary source of malware. Bad torrents go out of seeding pretty fast. No one would seed a rotten torrent

If it's copyrighted material and you don't use a VPN you can get into trouble.
Also don't use uTorrent, it's malware (I have heard), instead use qBittorrent

If you are afraid of malware or authorities... Take a EC2 micro instance on any country far off from yours ... Run any commandline torrent tool like rtorrent to download the file. If it's media file you can try streaming using vlc and file path as ftp. And if you find it okay , SCP it to your local machine and run it like a charm..

    Cheers

@stackodev seconding Transmission client. It is simple to use open source software and doesn’t have any agenda to make money.

To download a torrent after it is installed you find a link on a torrent site and it will open in transmission. Let it run to completion. Seeders are the people that can upload the file right now. Leechers are downloaders.
