Not uncommon for managers to ask their staff to put their name to lies, so that if they’re found out it’s you who will take the fall. You did the right thing in refusing to cover it up

@Crost So follow up on this since this story is from a couple of years back. My managers manager (BeardyMcBreadface) at the time didn’t give a shit and I did not have access to anybody else above that (the CEO in this case). The person who was assigned the task of performing the audit before me did report my manager to BeardyMcBreadface and was fired. When I asked why she was fired BeardyMcBreadface said she wasn’t a “team player”. So reading the room I dodged the hot potato tossed my direction. I had to wait for a change in leadership to flag it which eventually happened. We’ll call the new managers manager Steve. I reported it to Steve who fired my manager for that and so many other things. Steve then tried to fix the findings of the audit so it could pass. When the CEO found out an audit was failing he had to hold someone accountable so he fired Steve which is unfortunate since Steve was the only one trying to fix things.

I can only say "respect", sticking to your standards despite knowing the risks is a sign of being brave!

Reminds me a former boss...
Company that sells explosive and highly flammable materials.
50% of fire extinguishers are outdated and behind boxes.
Fire hose is a cut hose, just the tip, not even connected to water.
Inspection day, inspector passes by then goes to have lunch in a luxury restaurant.
And now I work 200m from such company... Maybe I'll ear a explosion someday so the jerk gets arrested.

Dev: Hey that internal audit you asked me to perform didn’t go so well
Manager: It has too! I’ll get in a lot of trouble if it doesn’t pass.
Dev: Ok well it’s a lot of work to get it to a passing state, we have to dedicate a lot of resources to fix all these findings.
Manager: We don’t have any spare resources, they are all working on new projects! Why did you have to find things??
Dev: ….It’s a lot of hard to miss stuff, like missing signatures on security clearance forms
Manager: Ok can’t you just say that everything is all good? They’ll probably not double check.
Dev: I’m not really comfortable with that…Look all of these findings are all just from one member of the team consistently not doing their job, can’t you just address that with him and I can make a note on the audit that issues were found but corrective action was made? That’s the whole point of audits.
Manager: You don’t get it, if anything is found on the audit I’ll look bad. We have to cover this up. Plus that’s a really good friend of mine! I can’t do that to him. Ok you know what? You are obviously not the right person for this task, I’ll get someone else to do it. Go back to your regular work, I’m never assigning you audits again.
