Have you ever use Ubuntu (or any Linux that use Pango to render text) for a significant amount of time that you notice that text in Mac OS is just not that crisp? To the point that it looks blurry, even more so in non-retina display.
I want to justify buying new Macbook for that sweet M1 silicon, but I don't think I can live with the blurry text. I rarely use built-in display on a laptop, but it is hard to find external monitor with Retina resolution (200+ dpi) with decent size, or ultrawide for that matter.

Apple pro display is costly, and not in ultra-wide format.
Also, I don't like fractional scaling.

M1 is a pioneer tech aimed at enthusiasts. You should not buy it if you want any stability and reliability

@iiii as much as I love my M1 laptop and think it works really well for pretty much everything, I have to agree here. The software is not *quite* there (for advanced users, for a casual user it's easily more than good enough), even though the hardware definitely is.

@respex did you check if you have Font Smoothing off? iirc MacOS supersamples the text instead of using subpixel AA like Windows does, which causes the text to be more accurate to the font but less aggressively clear. Font smoothing kinda works against that so try switching it off. It might also be using YCbCr instead of RGB, thinking your monitor is a TV, so look up how to check that.

Text rendering on MacOS seems to be a bit borked right now.
