How? Backups? Or using vulnerabilities in their vulnerabilies-exploiting code?

Got super lucky with this one as this wasn't a previous client of mine but my 'now' client didn't have ANY backups. Found a decrypt tool that actually worked, snagged the data directory as fast as I could and wiped that server.. Needless to say they dodged a bullet...
