I don't know about India specifically, but in general I would recommend to chose what suits him better. Getting very good in a job can probably earn you more than staying mediocre in another job that would pay more in theory.

I strongly recommend against splitting "types" of developers to backend and fronted.
The reason for that the websites is just one, big but still one, part of programming world.
It's easier to jump from fronted to backend than from web to embedded, or driver developer. -
Everyone is giving different answers as everyone is in different situations, about work and pay.
The pay totally depends on skill, experience, eagerness for continuous learning, the company, soft skills and little bit of luck.
I suggest to get started with the one he likes more. He can earn as much as he wants from it. Otherwise he can change later. It's not like coming to CS from History.

Hello Everyone, My younger brother wants to build a career as a software developer but he is confused about which profile pays more backend or frontend in India.
