Pathetic third world country salaries. I made around 670$ this month with overtime which funny enough is about 2.6x the avg median salary in my country. We have low wages, europe's taxes (with none of the benefits) and a higher cost of living lmao. there was some weeks where I worked 50 to 60 hours, some people tell me I should be grateful but with night shifts and working 12 hours a day I feel like I should be making much more...

I know how you feel mate. I used to envy my peers when I was in a third world country. The pay was good amongst my peers back home for sure but not comparable to that of my peers in Europe or the US. I would see job adverts for positions abroad and marvel at how much money they make.

What did I do? I moved abroad. Now earning double of what I used to to see in the job adverts those days working for a multinational company I couldn't get in back home!

Life is good.

I know not everyone can leave their home and jump on a plane. I will suggest you look for remote jobs in countries with little to no taxes or cut a deal with a potential employer during negotiations to supplement your take home due to the tax deductions you are getting.

@thirdworld To be honest, I was lucky. My wife had already moved abroad (her dad has been living abroad for decades) and I only had to join her. It wasn't easy to be honest but we scaled through after 2 years of separation.

That said though, if that wasn't the case, I certainly would have left through other means. I was getting job adverts from abroad whilst still living in a third world but didn't pursue them as I had an alternative.

If you are keen, I will suggest you look at job adverts with visa sponsorships and start practicing on hackerrank. Most companies use that nowadays especially for applicants from abroad.

@AjDevNull I am not working as a web dev anymore though, working in the cloud industry atm and still learning the ropes, hoping I can land a devops or cloud engineer role next year if I study well enough....

@thirdworld All the best mate. I work as a snr devops engr now and i cant stress how many tests I have had to do on hackerranks and the likes. It is not only for the Web devs. I even did one last years for a infra sec role.

I make almost first world money in the third world, taxes suck because I enter a bigger tax bracket.

I will move out as soon as I can.

I am from India, and little kids in US make more than my monthly salary (including 30% overtime) in one day making TikTok videos.

@thirdworld if you have a degree, experience, a clean record, and a willingness, immigration to Canada is actually quite attainable. Your biggest issue would be the amount they want you to have saved for express entry. But you can overcome that. Software Engineering does not need a LMIA. Canada has its issues but it represents a very strong passport and bases it’s immigration on verifiable merits rather than job offers or lottery. (Though there is a job offer pathway).

Like much of this industry, getting they first bit of experience is really the key. It’s difficult to get sponsored at any stage but very possible, that goes for US and Canadian immigration paths.

I don’t know much about other countries paths, but most Eurozone and Anglophone countries have tech paths open.

The other one I know of is if you get a remote job making US 2200 a month or more it’s very easy to get permanent residency in Argentina. 2200 month seems like a lot, but it’s cheap to a high col area firm.

@jeeper Thanks for taking the time writing this info :) btw I also speak French and while Canada may be a way, I'm gonna try my luck in US lottery this year and next year try for the EU, in the meantime I'm working on strengthening my portfolio through adding skills and certifications so hopefully it will get me there, I don't think such salary is easily attainable in Argentina no? I know they've been in an economic crisis for a while now.

@thirdworld I didn’t mean necessarily get the job in Argentina, but to get a remote job. But I guess if you got a remote job making that much you’d be living pretty well in Egypt too,
