Okay, it happens once in a while that code shrinks when doing real try-hard refactoring...
But almost always it ends up bigger. Sure, it gets less complex, more versatile, fails faster missing less error cases, has less code paths and often even gets some additional capabilities. But it doesn't really shrink.
