Be careful, I haven't looked at your book's publishing date but Neo4j underwent an overhaul a while back. The book might be outdated a bit.
However, Neo4j (today, at least) is awesome and Cypher is by far my favorite query language in existence. Graph algorithms (and graph theory alone) are very fun and very helpful in many different place in CS, so this is a great area to study.

@bioDan Cypher queries "look" like the data they're querying and the intended operations the query writer intends. They're very easy to learn and understand (less moving parts) and can form very complex queries with very few semantic building blocks, all while looking decent in the process.
