Make a pizza delivery system for a company. Fake or real. Build the API, then the UI customer interface, and then the business UI.

That would be a fantastic project for the Summer, thanks for the suggestion! I've just started learning Java FX so it would help me to under stand both ends of that

Unfortunately where I am, there isn't any opportunities to get a job at least related to computing as it's a small town <30,000 people; at least until late in the Summer when I move :/

@SirMiguel locally, sure I'm sure the job market isn't to hot. But Remeber, there are TONs and tons of remote jobs. And they pay well too. Don't limit yourself :)

find a project on github that interests you and fix an issue or add an enhancement, that's more impressive on the resume in the long run
-
@CodeOrDie That's also a good idea, I've never really looked into github so it would be an interesting learning experience!
-
@champion01 Hmm I'm not sure if I could possibly get hired for any jobs going as I'm only just finished first year and do far a noob :( What you said about the pizza delivery system is interesting though as there are many small businesses around here that don't have any automated systems at all so I could perhaps develop it into an actual product once I get past the learning experience of it :)
-
@CodeOrDie I second this. Projects like the pizza one are cool. But to demonstrate the ability to jump in on active projects, edit and contribute, and grasp it will speak wonders for companies.

@SirMiguel that would be stellar!!! You could start a business who knows! And honestly, it sounds like your ready. If your even entertaining projects like this I bet your ready. You'll never feel totally comfortable or "ready". We all learn and Google stuff every day on the job.
Don't cut yourself short! -
@champion01 Thanks, I really appriciate your encouragement. I'm definetly going to start on this now; you have given me a new spark of motivation!
Hey guys, I'm a noob developer (learning Java for a year now), I've come to the end of my year and I'm trying to think challenging project for myself but something that is plausible to do. I've made simple things like text editors and quiz games in the past but I would like to make something that is somewhat useful...
Any help would be greatly appreciated! :)
