IBM was actually originally a competitor of NCR (National Cash Register) (or Nice Crap for Resale) from the early 1900's. The guy who founded IBM was an executive let go from NCR. They were so pissed at the guy, that they took his desk out on the street, and set it on fire. That's actually where the term getting 'fired' comes from.
