My CS grade came in today and I'm sad because even at my best I could not get through it. Even with all the time I spent in and out of class, and those sleepless nights spent programming into the morning. All this effort and I still couldn't pass this class. My final killed me, and i'm upset because I know this exam doesn't represent all that I can do. It worries me because I feel like I will be told by employers that I'm not qualified because of a number. The number isn't everything, there's a story to every number.

You're not the only one who's been through this. It took me two tries for a few classes, and the 2nd time actually taught me more and created a better foundation as a whole and towards the end of my degree I was helping those who passed on the first time through because they missed a few of the fundamentals.

Nobody will even take a glance at your grades if you have some projects of your own that show you're competent!

As long as you know your shit, no one cares what your grades were. So find other ways to prove that you know your shit, like demonstrating live projects, some freelance work, contributing to open source projects, etc.

A lot of the programming podcasts that I listen to are by self-taught guys who don't all have degrees in the field, or degrees at all. Some are now working at companies like Microsoft and/or are prominent figures in the <programming language> world. don't give up buddy

If you know your stuff and try all you can to get valid experiences while at college, that's what will matter. I had 3 years of experience going into college, did an intern through my first two years at a company. Needless to say my grades weren't the best because I am not a good test take, but I got offered a lead engineering role and dropped out before I could finish. Experience is everything.

Don't give up. You may regret it the rest of your life. Work to get your foot in the door on that first job and the rest is up to you. Good luck and keep us informed.

Some of the best developers I knew in college had crap GPAs. Its awesome to work in an industry that lets you show the work you've done as opposed to the grades you could get!
