Haven’t written code in months. Is this what it means to be a “senior developer”?

I’m not sure if it’s a blessing or a curse tho. I kind of feel it’s the former 🤣🤣🤣

Only at orgs that view management as a naturally escalation from engineering.

I'm sure there are senior and non senior devs who haven't written code for a year or two who could code circles around me....

But I'd be a little skeptical of them none the less.

1. I want to see their good work as an example, or at least something we could talk about / understand.

2. I would worry that over time if you're not coding in a code base old ideas and etc could get stale / it could become harder for folks to understand each other.

I worked with a good guy who moved up to a non technical department head kinda guy. Good guy, but oh man he really wanted to get into the nitty gritty and as time went on I had to do a lot of work to get him to stop ... being technical. He'd suggest timelines and procedures that just weren't what he thought they were, and he was confused how they could have changed...

@SortOfTested agreed. I think I’m in that kind of org now where I’m expected to delegate most of the programming work and only do “higher level” software design instead.

@N00bPancakes that’s happened to me as well. Lots of devs end up choosing my management because of a “smaller workload” type of deal and because they become naturally more vocal in the org.

I just dont find it very rewarding to do management. It irks me.
