LHofman1104yJust tell him straight out.
If it's his first job he might just be used to being on his phone all day at school. You (or someone) need to make clear to him that that's not how real jobs work.
If you don't like confrontation, just speak to your manager or HR. -
LHofman1104yJust realized "my employee" "I'm not paying him...". You probably are the manager, so the above's comment should work just fine as well.

iamai21074ySometimes it can drive us crazy to micromanage. How about you give him a task and reasonable deadline which he may likely fail if he just texts his time awat. Leave him be so you don't see him texting which will eat your sanity. If he fails the task or tasks then you have reason to politely let him go.
-
Lyym6864yDo this:
Send him a meeting invite for a 1 on 1 with you as manager.
Say: "it has been brought to my attention that your usage of personal devices in the office seems a bit excessive. We would like for you to modify this behavior before the situation escalates and it is brought to my attention again."
Worked like a charm in my previous job -
Stop micromanaging. It doesn't matter as long as the job gets done. Constant short breaks might even improve productivity.

@electrineer Thing is hes a junior and cant be trusted to do things on his own. He must focus fully on the task at hand in order to absorb it. Now dude takes 2 days to do 2 hours work because distractions turn him into add monkey who cant read 200 lines of code to save his life. He ctrl+f's the shit ouf codebase instead of at least once, well read it just to have an idea of what is where and what are the possibilities. Anyway Im gonna fire him soon.
-
@Maartz LMAO you think I enjoy it? When you would pay someone nearly 100 euro a day from your own pocket and he would be useless you would feel the smell of money burning then you would be forced to micromanage as well. Use your brain for once and understand my side as well.
-
Maartz22914y@zemaitis that's an issue about the lack of motivation. Paying someone is not THE thing to do to expect him to do what you're asking for.
I understand your POV, but micromanaging just make things worse. You cant bear anymore this dude.
The real key is motivation, once I've discovered that, I've enhance my management skills.
And at the end of the day, if he doesn't achieve the expected work, he give you something to leverage to blame him, so use it. -
@Maartz You can motivate a fish so it would climb the tree, maybe after thousands of years of evolution it will be able to do it, but that's just insanity.

How to fucking tell my fucking new employee to start working instead of texting? Dude cant survive 15min without pulling out his phone and texting. I told him to at least timebox his work, like focus on work 1 hour and then text for 5 minutes.
By 5min texting and 5min working he wont learn shit. Im not paying him for sitting and texting.
Problem is, he's a friend of a friend so for some reason he feels quite chill here since he didnt have to bust his ass to get here. Also its his first work.
