You should be able to write JavaScript just fine, Typescript only add syntax, and don't change JavaScript.
I would make fun of somebody that wrote "Typescript developer" on his resumé -
I never tried typescript ever, but I hear it has "interface". I really miss that in my JS.

I felt the same way about SASS. I was pulled in kicking and screaming. And then I loved it.

Just write all your files with a .ts extension, but use plain JavaScript within. Seriously.
And who knows, someday you might start leveraging the Typescript extras. -
In all seriousness typescript is very useful and doesn't stop you doing anything you can in javascript.
