Why not elementary OS?

Good suggestion, I forgot about elementary. Use Ubuntu on my servers so just went with that. Ill check it out.

@Artemix isn't Ubuntu a Debian distro? But I have to agree with you Ubuntu isn't the best choice but it's a good start.

Yeah, you can always switch to Fedora, Manjaro or Antergos if you feel comfortable with Linux and start to hate outdated packages 😉

All good suggestions. This macbook is a spare machine so it will allow me to test out a few different distros.

Ask 10 Linux users which distro to install and you'll get at least 20 answers.

For such a small portion of the desktop market, think about how there's (supposedly.. bc there is no tracking!) close to 1000 variants.

@Artemix what debian do you go with? Last time I tried I was on stable, God the packages were old :( What is heavy and unstable with Ubuntu since 14.04? Beside unity, but it's easy to ditch.

I think Fedora is the best mix of everything. Not too heavy, supported by an enterprise organization (kind of) and has the bleeding edge software. It's gonna help you in job sectors as well considering most of the servers run centos or redhat enterprise.

I have a CentOS, a lubuntu server and an ubuntu server of my own and manage 4 ubuntu servers for my company. Never noticed anything like that

How did you actually install ubuntu? I use Parallels VM but didn't know it's easy to dual boot Ubuntu on Macbooks.

I installed Ubuntu as the main OS there is no OSX on it anymore. No dual booting on this.

@toXel I didn't look at the site you were recommending. I assumed and I was wrong. I figured it was a link on specifically how to accomplish this on his native platform, stuff to watch out for etc. Sorry if I offended you somehow. Just trying to help the guy out

@gnaaah elementary has never quite worked for me, I don't really get all the hype around it, in the Linux world nothing just works as well as ubuntu does

@Artemix Hmm, I've been using elementary for a few years now and still as fast as ever. Too bad not everyone has that experience!

@gnaaah +1 for Antergos. Very stable and up to date Arch distro. Easy to install and flexible in desktop environments.

@meain not sure if I've ever met anyone that started with Arch. Don't get me wrong - all of mine are Arch and I love it.

I think the unofficial Linux desktop motto should be: "You'll come for Ubuntu. You'll stay for Arch." 😇

@stable-penguin I have all my systems with Arch. But on my macbook it really seems to mess up.
