It actually is. It's used to equalize pressure inside. Helium-filled drives don't have this hole.

Turns out, heat increases pressure. Put some tape over it and enjoy the hard drive equivalent of a mosh pit.

Also your drives can fail if you take them too high up due to the decreased air pressure doesn't let the head float high enough.
