    @rutee07 hahaha. Want to know if whatsapp actually stores any data on the server related to chat

    And if deleted messages are actually deleted or kept for surveillance purposes

    @rutee07 hahaha just be serious for a moment. Do they store our data on server? What happens if i delete a message. Is it deleted from the server and local database?

    It is Facebook, what do you expect?!

    Without knowing anything about their implementation, there is not a single sliver of doubt in my mind that the message remains in their data storage like any other message

    Read about digital whisper algorithem.

    They don't have access to the data in transit - meaning when you send a message to another user
    however - they do have access to your message history stored locally via the installed app, or they can access the automatic weekly online backup. Also - The web app pulls the message history from your phone local data.

    @magicMirror they dont store anything on the server then?
    I would assume their server data storage would not be greater than 50-100 gb?
    Very hard to believe!!

    They store data in transit, and communication metadata - they can tell you sent a message, but not the content. after the message is delivered, it is removed from the server.
    They do keep the metadata though.

    @prash32 They have fucking Petabytes.

    @Ranchu i also believe the same. But need someone from official developers here to confirm the same.

    Also, it would be interesting to know what else they have on us.

    @magicMirror can all data be recovered from meta data
  • 1
    @prash32 you think they'd just openly admit to all that?
    Fuck no

    @Ranchu as a dev community we have to accept and confess if we are lying

    @prash32 Why should they bother?
    Think about how the webUI works.

    @prash32 True, but not everyone does that

    This is sad. AI will definitely be bad i think. Mass surveillance will go haywire because of such developers. We have a responsibility towards society.

    @prash32

    No, it will go that way because of companies.

    Weird vibes bro

    @prash32 Facebook is one of the biggest mass surveillance companies out there and they'll store whatever they legally can and provably even more.

    Whatsapp stores metadata indefinitely for as far as I know, so, not the content but literally EVERYTHING else.

    A Facebook/whatsapp employee would have an NDA or gag order as for revealing more than you could find in their ToS/privacy policy.

    This has zero to do with morals and everything with gathering as much data as possible. And that's the reason I don't use it personally.

    As long as deletion pays off less to them, I think they find it more profitable to store all your messages and expand storage over it 🤔

    You can try asking for your data that they’ve gathered on you and see for yourself. Although I don’t think you’ll get ALL the data, it could still give you better idea of what they store.
