kamen69845yFrom my experience @here is only used when you really want everyone online to look at something, whereas in that channel there might be more than just other developers - i.e. management, testers, designers, whatever...
-
This channel is for all iOS developers in the company no management or what so ever
-
shamansim445yI actually have to thank you because I didn’t know @here 👍
I think it was very relevant in your case to use it, and you were polite already to use only @here.
It’s their responsibility to put themselves in not disturbing mode if they don’t want to have notifications. -
@ZioCain got forbid I used @channel. I don’t want to think what could’ve happened in this case.
-
ZioCain27115y@PappyHans ok, but... what's even the difference between @here and @channel?
I mean, ok, @here should already point you to what should be actually read, while @channel should just say "hey, please read", but the both send a notification to everyone, so what's really the difference? -

ZioCain27115y@PappyHans oh... I really didn't know that! Thank you very much!
I mean, I hardly ever have to use that kind of stuff, but it's good to know -
@ZioCain I was surprised as well by this, but apparently this bot was always there doing the exact same task. Mentions everyone that left a comment in the rant I posted
-
I don't know what it is about slack and people complaining about notifications. Just fuckin dismiss it if you don't wanna respond. We got group chats in teams at my work and everyone gets pinged whenever anyone says anything. You know what I do? I read the messages because if someone said something in a group I'm in, it's probably relevant to me.
Like, this isn't a solo job. Collaboration is important. The whole point of a chat app is to notify you when someone wants to talk to you. I don't get it. -
haydeeezz375y@here on any big channel is a cardinal sin. Just type your message and hope people would read it.
You are rightly slammed because if more people can start to misuse it and the actual legit future announcements would be buried. -
@haydeeezz unfortunately I couldn’t “hope” that someone would read my message because as mentioned in my rant, this was critical and time sensitive PR. The use of (here) is created to fit a purpose. If you want to notify all online members of the channel, considering this channel is for mobile developers only I was right to use it. And who says using this is a sin? Used it within our working hours and in a tool made to enhance the collaboration between teams. Using the tool should not lead to such reactions as this is my only means of reaching other teams across the globe. It’s quite the opposite since this is a busy channel messages could be buried in the channel unless you specifically look for something. Using here notifies people of something that requires their attention and is related to their expertise
-
haydeeezz375y@PappyHans you have a solid justification. But in my experience, using channel wide notifications was really frowned upon in all the places I've worked at.
You may be right, it was probably necessary and and did its job. But a number of people taking time to slam you does indicate channel notifications are not the right way to get things done in your organization either. -
@haydeeezz well things are hardly getting done in my company but this is an entire set of different rants. Like I should be able to tag people on my PR and they go and review it, but only if they red their emails. Direct messages don’t work either as no higher ups are seeing them, so why should they bother answering. Using (here) is considered as dropping a nuke over Japan all over again. There is simply no right way of collaboration. People are entitled snowflakes this days
-
jdebs3375yWeird. We use @here all the time, but we have pretty small teams and create a lot of channels for specific uses. We also create groups, so we can tag a certain set of people on any given channel.
I mean, do they realize slack has settings to turn off notifications for @here and @channel? -

Needed a code review urgently. As I’m the only mobile dev in my team I posted my request in a mobile group channel on Slack asking for someone to take a look. I used @here to notify everyone that’s currently online and I got slammed for using @here in the channel because people got a bloody notification. Grow a pair and stop being a fucking snowflakes. This is a company Slack channel and I am asking you to take a look at company critical PR why wouldn’t I use @here
