So are we able to like follow certain people or is it just an open timeline where we see all posts?

Open, but you can choose how the stream performs.

We'll probably implement some kind of following at some point.

Before that, though, we will be overhauling the algo sort (the default feed sorting method) and it will do some cool stuff that I'm really excited about similar to what you might get out of followers. Using all of your +1 data it will bubble up rants that are more relevant to your personal tastes. This means it will take into account author's whose rants you frequently +1 and make their content show higher in your feed.

It will also consider content that got liked by people who have similar tastes to you, tags you enjoy, etc. The technology we use to store all of our data makes it efficient to do some pretty cool stuff with finding relationships in the the vote data and we can do some robust personalization.
