When you replace all PC fans with Noctua 6dB pieces and the noise-maker becomes your 3TB WD Red...

I've never thought I'll want to get rid of my hdd because of noise

*wrong tag. My bad

I'll be honest, my PC has crappy cooling and playing a multiplayer round of Space Engineers gets its temp up to 90 °C.

    Benefits:
    Cool jet engine sound simulation

Try getting a piece of rubber string and mounting it like this, I can't hear mine even under intense load

@AtuM Both capacitors and coiils can make noise under varying current. Heck, I bet even diodes can. Basically everything that has a changing magnetic characteristic depending on current.

@Nanos I've used 12cm 6db fans. 21€ each in local store. They brag about their bearings too so I guess they should be alright.

Warning : Noctua will need a change every 5 years or so. It WILL do much more noise than now. But hey, for the price for 5 years they are still best !

@kescherRant I have 3x1TB, mostlly for storing movies/music. Don't need much speed here

@NoToJavaScript thanks for the heads up. I hope they have improved since the day you had to replace your fans. If not - 100€ for 5 years of quietness is peanuts, esp for someone with heightened hearing threshold.

    Thx for the heads up

@netikras I put 5 to be on the safe side. In my server (You know, runs 24/7) I put them in about 7 years ago. Only ONE started to do noise (But attention it’s fighter jet type of noise) recently. Chaned it. And I think there is a second one which will do the same soon. (It already does it from time to time. Stopping it and relunching it fixes the problem)

@kescherRant eventually I'll go for m.2 nvme. Asus z97plus has m2 slot, so why not.

Bought that pc at '13 or so when ssds were a luxury

@netikras My PC uses a small SATA SSD and a 1 TB one. No NVMe as there are no dedicated NVMe slots on the board.
