Whenever you change your Instagram username it becomes unavailable completely even tho it's not taken. Not possible to get it back after changing.

Not sure if this a bug or a feature that they intended to have in their app...

    Probably to eliminate impersonators. If one with enough engagement changes his username, sure somebody will try to take his old username because it still engages people

    @theKarlisK I think it's just a matter of hashing so that every ID is unique as it allows easier business rules implementations, among them inflating user base

    @mexandroide I'm not sure they should care about usernames too much as uniqueness are in the emails now to my understanding after all the hacked accounts and users losing thousands of followers.

    Easy solution!
    Bruteforce account creation and renaming. Make every possible username unavailable.
