I've never had an update without notification on windows. People who complain ignore those messages and then after two months of ignoring it does an update.
Probably something similar on Mac. -
@Codex404 Just because you never has that doesn't mean it never happens.
I've been a witness two times when it came to updates installing without user consent! (And yes, the settings were correct as for NO automatic updates) -
orhun12535yAt least Windows 7 has postponing option.
(I'm not defending Windows for that, fuck Windows. Fuck Apple too.) -
@linuxxx
As a person who daily drives Windows on 4 PCs I've never seen it nor have I heard the stories IRL.
My boss has regularly unwanted updates but that's because he ignores every update message where you can volunteer to do so. He keeps saying he hasn't got any messages while I see him clicking them away. -
@Codex404 Then how the fuck does it happen that you are using default settings and you are never force-rebooted and I have disabled all the updates I could find and after a few OOO days I find my VM rebooted and updates installed....
-
sboesch5465yThis also happened to me. Broke my entire (legacy) toolchain and still couldn't manage to set it up on retarded Catalina. Luckily I always have an old backup Mac standing around.
Now I'll always make sure to have shutdown-blocking applications running. This was probably what protected us before from this fuck. -
@netikras because you probably ignore the messages? (or if you don't start your PC in two months)
-
@Codex404 well obviously since I'm OOO I am unaware of any messages shown on the screen. If that's what you mean
-
@Codex404 While I'd really love to believe that this was one of my former bosses' faults (it happened to him at a very bad moment, will probably rant about that), he built the company from scratch and knew both Linux and windows inside out. I know that he had all these automatic update settings on off mode and after that happened we opened a support ticket with Microsoft 😄
-
@linuxxx even when you have automatic updates on off (on not server versions) you do get an automatic update after two months of weekly notifications when your version is not supported anymore. Soon they will do it again for a version that launched early 2018.
-
@linuxxx you do when you have a pro license or better. They launched a tool to block the update. It just needs to be an active decision to not update.
And for the average consumer I'm glad it happens.
