Fucking cant solve productivity problem. Since I was working as programmer, about 8-9 years experience, constant complaints about my productivity and some jobs even fired me for this. Only one job did not complain and I worked in it longest time but still I was worrying very often about my productivity. It is fucking annoying. Why others are productive and I am not. How the fuck to find biggest bottlenecks to know which to work on.
I know I am not knowing technology perfectly, and from time to time I get stuck and so I ask other people help, or somehow manage to find solution myself but it takes more time. But dont know if that is the biggest issue. Should I intecify my learning? I am regularly studying, and working with symfony about 2 years, so I think I should know enough to be productive even with those strugles from time to time. But maybe they are too often?
I have listened book "deep work" and basic thing I think from this is - to minimize disctractions and learn to focus very well. But to minimize like in this book, I should work alone in my room. And even then I would like each hour for few minutes to read some new or smth, which this book says is bad, but a lot of people do that and they somehow get away with it. Plus if I work alone in my room, my social skills might get worse, and we all need social skills, even programmers.
I so envy to others who know how to be productive. I would hate if the only thing to be more productive is to reduce quality of the code, make more bugs. THats fucking cheating system.

I can relate to this, but recently I have been looking into that I might have undiagnosed(working on that now, doc said "strong possibility") ADHD, worth going down that road?

    Take pills.

@jennytengsonM they fired me few times and said bad productivity is a reason. In current company they say story points I do least in the team.

@dakkarant bit google about it , and there was written about hyperactivity. Dont feel like being hyper active

@adhddeveloper Too many side - effects.

I think healthy diet and getting a blood check-up to ensure you're not deficient of vitamins should be sufficient.

Specially, Vitamin D if you don't go out much.

Could be a lot of reasons. Health, diet, sleep. Have you considered getting tested for ADHD or dyslexia?

Apart from that, how do you know you are not productive. In my opinion production is not measured in tickets closed or lines of code written.

Yes, deadlines are important but were they realistic? More than often you have to adjust a deadline because things took longer than expected or you did not have enough information to set an accurate deadline. This is a critical point when comparing productivity. Always have a continuous evaluation of work complete VS work remaining VS deadline.

Impostor syndrome is an option as well. The companies firing you for having low productivity, were they good companies with a healthy work environment? Your issue might be a matter of self esteem, or the lack of it.

    Good luck to you, OP,

@Angry-dev ADHD doesnt exclusively mean physical and visible hyperactivity, its actually the less common form.

And trust me, just living healthy does not fix an actual physiological issue in your brain :P, thats just not how the body works.

@jennytengsonM commute is not the problem. I walk to my office in like 15 mins, so moving is reducing stress. But overall there happens stresses in life from time to time. And also worryig bit about current job- how long will they be satisfied with my work if I dont manage to improve productivity.

@Monk they mean or they don't but bosses often meassure by story points and it would sound as excuse and defending mysefl if I would tell them I guess.

Tasks are often boring. Same over and over. But in most jobs there are repeating task. Forms, csv reports, ajax requests, admin panels, etc - same shit all the time :) With ocational something unique.

"Do you enjoy your current job? Do you enjoy your frameworks, languages, tools?"

Depends on what you compare with. I guess besides making me worry about being fired it is still the best job I have had. But I still enjoy more browsing facebook, reading economic news and discussing, watching youtube, playing foosball, etc but I dont make money from this so it is out of question :)

    @Monk

"Do you enjoy your frameworks, languages, tools?"

Working with symfony which I like because it is very popular, so gaining experience in case I will need another job. Language yes. Tools yes. And also with symfony it is higher change to have good developers team who follow SOLID principles so this I like. What I dont like about symfony is that it wastes lot of time when you get an error and cannot find out quickly how to solve. It does simple things in too complicated way. I have worked with other frameworks - all of them were easier.

@digib0y I try eating bit healthier than others. I see other dring lot of coca cola and eat sweats, kebabs and I dont see them having productivity problems. I still eat too much carbs, but I cannot find tasty replacement and quick to cook. Like spagethi almost every morning - 5 minutes of cooking plus few minutes till water boils. And tomato sauce - tastes good. Does not waste time in the morning.

You really think vitamins make big difference? I have checked D and B group, but not otthers. I am using D vitamins past year or more. B probably is ok because doctor did not tell about them. So maybe I need to ask doctor to check all of them?

@ReverendLovejoy "Have you considered getting tested for ADHD or dyslexia?"

No, I just read on the internet about them, does not feel like I have those symptoms. Besides maybe some minor which probably are normal. Like dyslexia "Difficulty doing math problems" - it is dificult when you dont have enough training or some math taks are always dificult for everyone :)

"Apart from that, how do you know you are not productive. In my opinion production is not measured in tickets closed or lines of code written."
Because boses told me so and even fired because of that. Nobody meassures by lines of code, but they really measure by story points.

@ReverendLovejoy "Yes, deadlines are important but were they realistic?" there were unrealistic deadlines in the past definitely. Now in current company I rarely have deadlines, I just take the amount of tasks which I believe I will manage to do in sprint. I try to complete what I "committed" and even made motivational system for myself - once I complete them - I take like 1 day holiday. The sooner I complete, sooner I can take holiday.

"Impostor syndrome is an option as well. The companies firing you for having low productivity, were they good companies with a healthy work environment? Your issue might be a matter of self esteem, or the lack of it."

I can complain about them but if other people were not fired and they did not quit themselves, then I think they were good enough.

    Thanks

@jennytengsonM I have tried pomodoro like in 2010 and still using some form of it. I google back then how to improve productivity and found it :) Now doing 1 hour of work and 10 minutes break. Thats because getting up each 25 minutes from the table I felt stress in the companies because of others thinking its too often. Others sit for few hours often without getting up.

@Monk something cool would be to code software for tesla car for example but I believe in there also there are various boring tasks, just that end product and company image looks super awesome. Plus it does not have remote jobs probably and I dont want to relocate and my PHP language probalby is not needed for tesla cars :) And to get a job there you have to be super good probalby.

I remember in my first job, it looked that I am getting so big money for pressing buttons which I have never get before and I already knew from my unsuccesful freelance experience that I might be slowly working because what I earned in freelancing I could not afford to make living, and so I lived in my parents house. So I was thinking if I cannot earn by freelancing where office did not cost, even I did not pay taxes - and still not making enough money, how will I make enough for a company then. So I tried to be as fast as I can and already on the first days I got to the point where I could not think productivley because of stress level. I was just waching to the monitor and could not think anymore it felt. So I even told to the boss that, and luckily my lead was not asshole and told to relax, in that way I can get even some psychological problem, we went outside, he smoked. And he was nice all the time with me and helped to reduce stress. Still fired after like 9 months.

I thought about quitting my first job after just few days of work because I thought I cannot manage stress and be productive with such high stress. Before the telling to my lead, I told to my sister something about that. She told something to not quit, so I went again to the job. Until I was exhausted so that I told to the lead as I said in post above.

@jennytengsonM wow , this is sick what you do :) I dont even understand lot of words which you mention :)

I believe mental state matters. Just some companies make stress which reduces productivity I think. With physical not sure - I know people who do not do sports and have no productivity issues. But sports would not hurt me I know, just hard to find time. I spend like 5-10 hours a week on foosball which is not so intensive as other sports, but hours are taken and not much time left. But it is very good for mental state, because we have lot of laugh near the table.
But your way is way too hard and taking lot of time. How much time do you sleep then? Or how much do you have for yourself left?
I really want do like others who dont waste so much time and still are productive.

@jennytengsonM "I talk to nobody anymore after 8:30 and I devote my time to all sorts of self-care and other introvert things such as video games."

how much time you spend on this?

    @jennytengsonM wow, still decent amount.
